W3 :: Regret

Unpleasant companion
heavy hands on my back
crashes me down
crushing my soul

Happiness knocks
don’t answer
is your advice
keep quiet

Carrying the past
dumping it on my path
always
suffocating my dreams

your grey veil
winds up my stillness
swirling me up
catching me

as the years go by
my body ages
your strength increases
holding me tight

W3 – Dennis’ prompt: Giving the Abstract a Voice

For this prompt, write a poem that gives an abstract idea a personality, a voice, and a life of its own.

Choose something we cannot physically touch: Destiny, Time, Hope, Justice, Fear, Memory, Regret, Silence, Truth or any other abstract concept that interests you.

Tanka Tuesday :: the mind

the mind
with its secrets
white matter, brown matter
wired in power and connections
a breath
one minute here, another there
losing the sense and space
fluttering wings
fading

Colleen’s prompt this week is to write a Cinquain or a variation of it. I’ve chosen my favourite form, the Butterfly cinquain (a nine-line syllabic titled form with the pattern 2-4-6-8-2-8-6-4-2).

W3 :: lost and found

Unslept nights

Floating between here and there

Looking for an anchor

At the mercy of the wind, words and worries

It’s there, within her hands

Only her soul can touch it

When she is ready to receive

The bright light of peace

Grounded and rested

A breeze bathes away the worries

A smile of comfort

Lights up her face

W3: Punam’s prompt: Finders, keepers, plot twisters

Tell a little story in verse! Write a poem in three stanzas, with no more than 12 lines in total. Your stanzas can be different lengths.

  • Stanza one: Introduce a character who finds something unusual or strange.
  • Stanza two: Show what happens when your character uses what they’ve found.
  • Stanza three: Bring the story to an unexpected realization.

Let your imagination lead you, and see where your character’s discovery takes them!
